AAS 3320 - The Black Radical Tradition

“What ever happened to the politics of black liberation?” First raised in the waning years of the Pan-Africanist/Marxist-Leninist Maoist phase of the Civil Rights/Black Power revolution, this question animates this advanced seminar in Africana critical thought. With a temporal focus on the twentieth century, we will concern ourselves with explicating the dominant themes, theoretical orientations, and political strategies that in/form the construction and articulation of insurgent forms of Africana social and political philosophy. Our discussions will include considerations of Africana womanism, black feminism, black nationalism, Marxism Leninism-Maoism, Africana Freedom Movement(s) as a human rights movement, Pan-Africanism and radical democracy. Seminar readings will consist of both germinal texts in Africana social and political thought as well as contemporary reassessments of black radical thinkers and texts. Seminar members are expected to carefully, critically, and completely read the selected texts for each seminar meeting as well as bring other relevant texts, ideas, and orientations to bear on seminar conversations.
