Vision

The Department of Management and Marketing is focused on providing the stakeholders of Winston-Salem State University and residents of the region with excellent and forward-looking education in the disciplines of management and marketing. To do this, the faculty is committed to a philosophy of continuous improvement through research, community involvement and academic interaction with other scholars in the national and global environment. The Department places a premium on fostering intellectual development of its faculty, staff and students, providing a collegial work environment for all, maintaining the highest standards of academic integrity and professionalism, providing superior service to the surrounding community, and advancing the field of knowledge within the disciplines found in the department. The Department exists to educate its students in a manner that will allow them to succeed in their chosen fields of study.

Mission

The Department of Management and Marketing of the School of Business and Economics of WSSU supports the undergraduate majors of management and marketing and two graduate programs, the Concentration in Human Resource Management as a part of the management major, a minor in Human Resource Management, and the Center for Entrepreneurship. The faculty and staff of the department strive to impart undergraduate and graduate students with the knowledge, skills and abilities befitting business students. Through its centers, research, classroom teaching, and outreach activities, the faculty and staff of the department seek to provide advanced education in their respective fields of study for students and residents of the surrounding community. Additionally, the faculty and staff of this department are committed to providing guidance and counsel to members of the local business community with the understanding that such interaction often results in the maintenance of currency that is so important in the classroom.

Departmental Goals

1.    To enable students to gain literacy in the disciplines of management and marketing that is fundamental to the maintenance of effectiveness in the world of business.

2.    To provide courses to establish the students’ grasp of the critical thinking required to create the competitive edge necessary for the maintenance of effective business organizations.

3.    To provide a basic understanding of the scientific process required for the analysis of business situations.

4.    To create students with an understanding of ethical business practices across all areas of the management and marketing disciplines.

5.    To improve teaching effectiveness.

6.    To provide service to the Department, the School of Business and Economics, the University, and the community.

Policies

The Department Management and Marketing recognizes CLEP (College Level Examination Program) scores of 3 or greater as sufficient to provide undergraduate credit for the respective course under examination. The four courses for which CLEP credit may be earned are: Principles of Management, Principles of Marketing, Organizational Behavior, and Leadership.

 

The Department of Management and Marketing accepts transfer credit based on articulation agreements from community colleges for elective credit in the majors of management and marketing. No credit will be accepted from a community college for any course listed at the 3000-level or higher in the Department of Management and Marketing. Exceptions to this policy are based on articulation agreements between Winston-Salem State University and specific community colleges.

 

The Department of Management and Marketing generally will accept transfer credit from regionally accredited four-year institutions. However, specific course credit is evaluated on a case by case basis and may require the submission of an original course syllabus or catalog description. Students seeking to take courses at other institutions after enrollment at WSSU must seek out prior approval for such credit to be applied to specific courses in the department.

 

Departmental Honors

To receive departmental honors, a student must have:

·         Eighteen (18) SH of junior and senior level honors courses

·         Nine (9) SH of honors courses in the major (business core courses do not count)

·         Grades of A and B in all honors courses

·         Junior and Senior Honors Colloquia

·         Honors Thesis, Research/Creative Project
