The College of Arts and Sciences consists of nine academic departments: Behavioral Sciences and Social Work, Chemistry, Computer Science, English and Foreign Languages, Fine Arts, Life Sciences, Mass Communications, Mathematics, and Social Sciences. It offers 26 undergraduate degree programs leading to the B.A., B.S., B.S.W., or B.I.S.; a certificate program in Computer Science; one graduate program – Master of Science in Computer Science and Information Technology; and an Add-on Licensure in ESL (18 hours). (Relocated to the Department of Advanced Studies in the School of Education and Human Performance in fall 2010).

Housed in departments in the College are a number of special programs: Project Strengthen, a university-wide basic research program designed to provide basic research and advanced academic opportunities for faculty and students in health or health-related sciences (housed in the Life Sciences Department); the Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies program (housed in the English and Foreign Languages Department); and the Military Science Program, administered by the Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (AROTC) and offered on a cross-enrolled basis with the host program at Wake Forest University (housed in the Social Sciences Department). Other units in The College include the Diggs Gallery, the STEM Scholars Program and the Center for Mathematics, Science, and Technology Education.

The College also provides the majority of the courses required for the general education core curriculum, designed to provide the academic and cultural foundations necessary for a liberal education. The College’s goals, listed below, provide a general context for the delineation of program objectives for the academic departments:

  1. To provide opportunities through a liberal arts framework for students to acquire general knowledge which can assist the development of communications skills, problem-solving abilities, critical thinking, and research, and which prepare students for success with specialized subject matter.
  2. To ensure that all students acquire specialized knowledge and skills to prepare them for their chosen profession upon graduation or to undertake further study.
  3. To provide experiences which encourage social interaction, an appreciation for the arts, an awareness of cultural traditions, and a global perspective on issues that relate to the human condition.
