Vision

The Department of Life Sciences will be premier in discovery and dissemination of scientific knowledge, fostering professional growth of faculty members and students, as a benefit to the community.

Mission

The mission of the Department of Life Sciences is to offer a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Biotechnology and a minor in biology and biotechnology. The BS in Molecular Biology was discontinued May 15, 2009. Students who were admitted to the program prior to this time will be allowed to complete their work over the next three years. The biotechnology program will include a molecular biology concentration as an option beginning fall 2010. The department offers service courses for other academic departments and engages in research, scholarly activities, and community service.

Departmental goals include the following:

  1. To provide courses to increase students’ understanding of the process of science, of the living world, and of the concepts and vocabulary needed for scientific literacy in biology.
  2. To provide basic science courses for students seeking admission to allied health programs.
  3. To provide major programs to prepare graduates in biology and molecular biology for entry into graduate schools, health related professional schools, and positions in technological and industrial firms.
  4. To provide excellent advising and mentoring.
  5. To provide an atmosphere and infrastructure conducive to scholarly and creative activities.
  6. To improve teaching effectiveness.
  7. To provide service to the University and the community.
