The Department of Social Sciences offers quality educational programs essential to the College of Arts and Sciences of Winston-Salem State University. The Department houses six disciplines— history, justice studies, political science, geography, philosophy, and religion. Courses in these disciplines contribute to the university’s Core and General Education Curriculum required of all students, provide electives that students across the university may take to strengthen the liberal arts base of their education, and offer seven baccalaureate programs. The degree programs are history, justice studies, political science, and political science with a concentration in public administration. The department also manages the North Carolina program for secondary level social studies certification. The Social Studies secondary Education Program was discontinued May 15, 2009. No additional students will be admitted to the program. Students who were enrolled in the program will be given an opportunity to complete the program over the next three years. All secondary education programs were relocated to the Department of Secondary Education in the School of Education and Human Performance in fall 2010. By combining content mastery, critical thinking skills, and communication skills in their curricula, the disciplines prepare their majors and others for employment in their chosen professions and for advanced studies at the graduate level.
