BIO 4382 - Cancer Biology

Credits: 3 hrs
This course provides students with the fundamental considerations that affect the cells at a molecular level that create the circumstances from which abnormal cells arise. Lectures and demonstrations will be used to explain the role of nutrients, toxins, free radicals, DNA repair enzymes, growth factors, oncogenes, tumor suppressor genes, angiogenesis, signal transduction mechanisms in tumor formation, the role of the white blood cell system, macrophages, the role of rare proteins involved in tumor necrosis, apoptosis, and the role of natural killer cells and how they can be attenuated. In addition, this course will cover cancer epidemiology, prevention, and principles of drug action in relationship to a cancer diagnosis.
