LLS 1349 - Civil Liberties in Times of WarCredits: 3 hrs. How much of our individual rights and freedoms are U.S. citizens willing to give up in exchange for more security? Case studies covered will range from the 1798 Alien & Sedition Act to the 2001 USA PATRIOT Act. Other case studies will include the suspension of Habeas Corpus by President Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War; the internment of Japanese-Americans in concentration camps during World War II; and the treatment of prisoners of war and Arab-Americans after September 11, 2001, with particular focus on the Guantanamo Bay U.S. detention facility and the practice of “Extraordinary Rendition.”
