HIS 3334 - History of Africa Since 1808Credits: 3 This course is designed to introduce students to the geography, history, politics and culture of Africa. By the end of the class, students will have an in depth understanding of the trends and history of Africa as well knowledge of many of the current issues facing contemporary African societies. This course will introduce students to the diversity of African cultures, politics and history. We will focus on the connection with Europe since the end of the Slave Trade and the beginnings of colonial Conquest and then discuss the way colonialism manifested itself in the different regions of the continent. Lastly, the class will discuss the various themes of liberation across the continent and look at post-colonial Africa’s different countries and criticize the ways in which the imperialist past helped shape contemporary Africa.
