HIS 3303 - Early Islamic Societies, Cultures and Thought Credits: 3 hrs This course is the first of a two-part survey of Muslim communities and institutions from the rise of Islam to the present. This part focuses on the diverse sources of medieval Islamic societies, cultures and thought from late antiquity to 1500 C.E. Special attention is given to the formation of early Muslim communities, the rise of the Islamic states and economies in Western Asia, and the interplay between religious and political thought and culture in medieval Muslim societies across Africa, Europe, and Asia.
