MUS 3316 - Music History I Credits: 3 hrs This lecture course will examine the historical, philosophical, scientific, religious and cultural movements that impacted the development of music in Western Civilization from the time of Antiquity (Ancient Hebrews, Greeks and Romans), the Medieval period, the Renaissance period and the Baroque period. Students will be expected to learn about the historical, philosophical, social, scientific, artistic and religious movements that in turn would have an impact upon the development of art music in Europe and later the Western Hemisphere. Exposure to the great works of musical art from this time period and an overview of the major composers and musical thinkers will be a component of this course. Students will engage in a research project that will examine one major composer who work is considered seminal to this time period.
