SPA 3315 - Spanish America

Credits: 3 hrs
Spanish America begins with a cursory look at Spain’s origins, the 700-year presence of the Moors, the processes of Spanish unification, Catholic Spain, and the foundations of global exploration. The course will examine the impact of Spanish exploration and the discovery of the New World, the coming into being of colonial Spanish America, and the demands for independence in the nineteenth century. Ultimately, the course will look at the emergence of Spanish American nations and the constructions of race, ethnicity, and gender to finally analyze the region’s relations with the US and the polemics of immigration. The course methodology will be supported by historical and literary texts, cinematic resources, and documentaries. Students will be required to complete a research term paper addressing issues of cross-cultural understanding. HISPANIC CULTURE AND CIVILIZATION IS TAUGHT ENTIRELY IN SPANISH.
Pre-requisite(s): Passing SPA 2312 - Intermediate Spanish II  with a “C” or better, or permission of department
