CHE 4341 - Capstone Experience Credits: 3 hrs Students in this writing emphasis (WE) capstone course will focus their efforts on the preparation of a research paper and delivery of a seminar on a topic of current interest in the field of chemistry. The research paper will require students to successfully utilize their information literacy and written communication skills, as well as engage students in the writing process (multiple drafts/revisions, peer & professional reviews, etc.). Upon completion of the writing assignment, students will be required to orally present their topic in a brief presentation open to faculty and peers. All students will be required to complete an assessment activity (i.e. a standardized subject test) related directly to the chemistry major. Additional course assignments may be employed to support these initiatives.
Students will also participate in service-learning activities; these may take the form of serving as a TA or tutor in introductory courses, tutoring area secondary school students in chemistry-related subjects, participating in an internship with area organizations, or similar activities. Additionally, this course will include an ethics module discussing the impacts of science and scientific research in the community and world at large; students will model ethical outcomes to current scientific advances.
