MGE 6301 - Integrated Methods for the Middle School

Credits: 3 hrs.

This course teaches the principles and methods of teaching the middle grade learners through integrating subject matter. Students will plan interdisciplinary and integrative study units, work in teams and focus teaching on the development of the emergent adolescent. Practices such as individualized skill development, uses of technology, democratic process, writing across the curriculum, problem solving, creativity, in-depth explorations, and guidance will be studied. Integrative approaches will include interdisciplinary teaching of two or more subjects, fusion (bringing a variety of subjects together to focus on an issue or theme, core [using content and skills to help learners deal directly with problems and issues of significance) and integration (designed to guide life experiences for the students and carried out in a real-world context). The professors who serve as liaison for the English and Foreign Languages, Social Sciences, Mathematics Departments and teachers from the middle school will serve as human resources for the teaching of this course.
