Major in Chemistry
Program Description
The Department of Chemistry shares Winston-Salem State University’s mission of student success by providing excellence in teaching, scholarship and service. Courses in the major program, along with those in the General Education, provide opportunities for students to develop skills required for success in the work world and in graduate/professional schools. Chemistry majors participate in hands-on research experiences involving state-of-the-art instrumentation. In 2014/2015 academic year, two majors were co-authors in peer-reviewed publications and eleven students presented their research at regional or national meetings. Chemistry majors and minors may join the American Chemical Society Student Affiliate (ACS, professional chemistry society) or Phi Lambda Epsilon (PLU, national chemistry honor society). In 2014/2015 year, the ACS Student Affiliate was awarded an Honorable Mention for its activities.
Vision
The Department of Chemistry is focused on providing opportunities for students to develop academic and hands-on research skills to enhance their competitiveness in: 1) the global STEM workforce, 2) gain admission into graduate program in chemistry and advanced studies in forensic chemistry, and 3) gain admission into health-professional programs including medical, pharmacy, dental and veterinary schools.
Mission
The mission of the Department of Chemistry is to offer relevant and vibrant major programs in Chemistry and minor programs in Chemistry and Physics. The Department also offers service courses in general chemistry, physical science, environmental science and physics for students in related areas and to fulfill components of the general education core curriculum.
Departmental Goals
- To prepare students for graduate/professional school admission or entry-level professional positions.

Student Learning Outcomes

Major Requirements
The Chemistry department offers a flexible BS Degree in Chemistry as well as a BS Degree in Chemistry with one of three concentrations: 1) Pre-Health Professions Concentration; Non-ACS Certified, 2) ACS Certified, and 3) Biochemistry Concentration; ACS Certified.
The BS Degree in Chemistry (Pre-Health Professions Concentration; Non-ACS Certified) requires 29 hours of chemistry courses above the General Chemistry sequence. The hours must include one year of analytical chemistry, one year of organic chemistry, one semester of physical chemistry, two semesters of 3000 or 4000 courses, and senior seminar. Related area courses required for the concentration are (a) one year of calculus, (b) one year of algebra or calculus-based physics, and (c) one semester of general biology with a lab. Additional biology courses (anatomy and physiology and microbiology) are required for students seeking admission into the pre-health professions and related programs.
The BS Degree in Chemistry (ACS Certified) requires 38-40 semester hours in chemistry above the General Chemistry sequence. The semester hours in chemistry must include one year of analytical chemistry, one year of organic chemistry, one year of physical chemistry, one semester of inorganic chemistry, one semester of biochemistry, three semester hours of advanced chemistry elective and two semester hours of synthetic and analytical methods lab. Students must conduct a directed research and submit a written report. This may be satisfied by taking Directed Research I. Required related area courses are (a) one year of calculus, (b) one year of calculus-based physics, and (c) one semester of general biology and lab.
The BS Degree in Chemistry (Biochemistry Concentration; ACS Certified) requires 40-42 hours of chemistry courses above the General Chemistry sequence. The hours must include one year of analytical chemistry, one year of organic chemistry, one year of physical chemistry, one year of biochemistry, one semester of inorganic chemistry, and two semester hours of synthetic and analytical methods lab. Students must conduct a directed research in biochemistry and submit a written report. This may be satisfied by taking Directed Research I. Related area courses are identical to those required for the ACS Certified chemistry major above. In addition, certain courses in biology, as specified in the program, are required.
A grade of C- is accepted as a passing grade for individual courses in the major; however, students are required to attain an overall minimum GPA of 2.0 in chemistry courses. A total of 40 semester hours of course work at or above the 3000 level are required of all degree concentrations.
Minor Requirements
Chemistry Minor
A minimum of 20 semester hours in chemistry are required for chemistry minor.
Physics Minor
A minimum of 19 semester hours in physics are required for physics minor.
