General Information
The Department of Mathematics conducts teaching, research, and service related to mathematical disciplines, serving students both within the department and various math-related disciplines and offering general education courses to students in all disciplines.
Expertise in the department includes the fields of cell biology, microbiology, molecular biology, neuroscience, physiology, and other related fields.
Programs in the Department of Mathematics prepare students for careers in the mathematical sciences, graduate school, and professional school. Careers in mathematics include operations research analyst, statistician, mathematics teacher, actuary, physician research scientist, computer scientist, inventory strategist, staff systems air traffic control analyst, cryptologist, attorney, economist, mathematics professor, environmental mathematician, robotics engineer, geophysical mathematician, design, ecologist, and geodesist.
Mission
The Department of Mathematics offers a major program in mathematics, a major program with a concentration in statistics, and supports a major program in mathematics with secondary education teacher certification offered by the Department of Education. The department also offers a minor program in mathematics, general education mathematics courses, and support courses for students majoring in other areas.
Departmental Goals
The goals of the Department of Mathematics are to:
- Prepare graduates for entry-level positions in teaching, business, industry and government, or for graduate study.
- Develop in the mathematics major the required skills to solve problems, think critically, and communicate mathematically.
- Develop skills to solve problems and think critically within the framework of a liberal education.
