Program Description

Courses in the major program afford opportunities for students to develop skills that are used in the work world and in graduate or professional schools.

Student Learning Outcomes

1.    Students will demonstrate a comprehension of fundamental chemical and scientific principles.

2.    Students will be able to apply fundamental chemical and scientific principles.

3.    Students will be able to perform chemical laboratory techniques and procedures while being aware of laboratory safety.

4.    Students will be able to effectively and professionally communicate scientific findings.

Major Requirements

All chemistry majors must complete the Pre-requisites and Major Requirements as outlined below. In addition, students must choose one of four possible degree tracks (Chemistry, Pre-Health Professional, Chemistry – ACS, Biochemistry – ACS) and complete the electives as specified for their selection.

On the traditional chemistry track, students must take 30 hours of chemistry courses above General Chemistry II (CHE 2312). The 30 semester hours in chemistry must include one year of analytical chemistry, one year of organic chemistry, one year of physical chemistry, either one semester of inorganic chemistry or one semester of biochemistry, and seminar. Related area courses required for a chemistry major are (a) one year of algebra-based physics, and (b) mathematics through Calculus II.

Students following the pre-health professional track must complete 34 hours of chemistry courses above CHE 2312. Related area courses are similar to those required for the chemistry major above. Students in this degree concentration are encouraged to take calculus-based physics, instead of the algebra-based courses.   In addition, certain courses in biology as specified in the program are required.

An American Chemical Society (ACS) certified major in chemistry requires a minimum of 41 semester hours in chemistry above CHE 2312. The 41 semester hours in chemistry must include one year of analytical chemistry, one year of organic chemistry, one year of physical chemistry, one semester of inorganic chemistry, one semester of biochemistry and senior research.  It also includes seven hours of advanced chemistry electives. Related area courses required for the chemistry major are (a) one year of calculus-based physics, and (b) mathematics through Calculus II.

An ACS certified major in chemistry with a biochemistry concentration requires 43 hours of chemistry courses above CHE 2312. Related area courses are identical to those required for the ACS Certified chemistry major above. In addition, certain courses in biology, as specified in the program, are required.

No grade below C in any chemistry course will be accepted toward the major, and a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 for all chemistry courses taken is required. A total of 40 SH of course work above the 3000 level are required of all degree concentrations.

Footnotes:

a. A student’s enrollment into MAT 2317 (Calculus I) is dependent upon their performance on the Math placement exam. Some students may need to take one or all of the following courses to meet the pre-requisites for Calculus I: MAT 1311 (College Math), MAT 1312 (Pre-Calculus I), MAT 1313 (Pre-Calculus II).

b. Of the 26 elective semester hours, students must select at least 10 semester hours, which are at or above the 3000 level, in order to meet the university’s graduation requirement (A minimum of 40 semester hours at or above the 3000 level). Students are also encouraged to select courses which can lead to a minor in an area of their interest.

c. Some graduate health professional programs, such as Physical Therapy and Pharmacy, may require two semesters of Human Anatomy as a prerequisite for admittance. If you are planning to attend one of these professional programs, it is recommended that you take the Anatomy and Physiology I sequence (BIO 2311/2111) and choose the Anatomy and Physiology II sequence (BIO 2312/2112) as an elective.

d. Of the 9 elective semester hours, students must select at least 3 semester hours, which are at or above the 3000 level, in order to meet the University’s graduation requirement (A minimum of 40 semester hours at or above the 3000 level).

e. CHE 4415 is an Advanced Chemistry course requirement for all ACS-track Chemistry majors.   It is recommended that students take this course over a period of two semesters.

f.   Advanced Chemistry elective to be selected from: CHE 4314 – Quantum Mechanics; CHE 4315 – Adv. Analytical Chemistry; CHE 4316 – Adv. Organic Chemistry; CHE 4317 – Adv. Inorganic Chemistry; CHE 4347 – Biochemistry II; CHE 4415 – Senior Research

g. Advanced Physics elective to be selected from: PHY 3334 - Optics; PHY 3335 - Electricity & Magnetism I
