Interdisciplinary Studies - Depth Studies

Depth studies require a 36 semester-hour (SH) specialization that includes six (6) SH in courses labeled IDS and a minimum of 30 SH of courses in the WSSU catalog from the academic programs cited below which includes required pre-requisite courses and/or related courses from the same. Students select their courses from the chosen academic department based on their needs and goals and course prerequisites.

Students are required to complete 30 SH in one of the Depth Study areas, with at least In addition, students must complete CSC 1306 (Computer and Its Use I) or demonstrate competency in basic computer applications through other approved courses, “challenging” the final exam in CSC 1306.

The courses in the depth-study may not be transferred from two-year institutions, and at least one of the courses taken must be at the 4000 (senior) level.  17 SH (of the 30) must be at either the 3000 or 4000 level.  No course counted toward the degree may duplicate a course previously taken from any institution. Traditional Depth Studies, available on campus, include the following:       

ART                                              A minimum of 30 SH from the Art Paradigm in the WSSU Catalog of those 20 SH must be in 3000-4000 level courses.

BIOLOGY                                      A minimum of 30 SH from the Biology Paradigm in the WSSU Catalog of those 20 SH must be in 3000-4000 level courses.

CHEMISTRY                                  A minimum of 30 SH from the Chemistry Paradigm in the WSSU Catalog of those 20 SH must be in 3000-4000 level courses.

GERONTOLOGY                             A minimum of 30 SH from the Gerontology Paradigm in the WSSU Catalog of those 20 SH must be in 3000-4000 level courses.

HISTORY                                      A minimum of 30 SH from the History Paradigm in the WSSU Catalog of those 20 SH must be in 3000-4000 level courses.

JUSTICE STUDIES                              A minimum of 30 SH from the Justice Studies Paradigm in the WSSU Catalog of those 20 SH must be in 3000-4000 level courses.

MASS COMMUNICATIONS          A minimum of 30 SH from the Mass Communications Paradigm in the WSSU Catalog of those 20 SH must be in 3000-4000 level courses.

MATHEMATICS                                 A minimum of 30 SH from the Mathematic Paradigm in the WSSU Catalog of those 20 SH must be in 3000-4000 level courses.

MUSIC                                                  A minimum of 30 SH from the Music Paradigm in the WSSU Catalog of those 20 SH must be in 3000-4000 level courses.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION                   A minimum of 30 SH from the Physical Education Paradigm in the WSSU Catalog of those 20 SH must be in 3000-4000 level courses.

PSYCHOLOGY                                     A minimum of 30 SH from the Psychology Paradigm in the WSSU Catalog of those 20 SH must be in 3000-4000 level courses.

SOCIOLOGY                                        A minimum of 30 SH from the Sociology Paradigm in the WSSU Catalog of those 20 SH must be in 3000-4000 level courses.

African and African American Studies

Mission

Formally institutionalized in the American academy in the last half of the twentieth century, African and African American Studies is a vibrant and dynamic discipline that creates new knowledge about the world and human existence through the critical and comprehensive study of the peoples, cultures, and ideas of Africa and the African diaspora.  The Bachelor of Arts in African and African American Studies is comprised of core courses as well as courses from various areas of specialization.  A minor in African and African American Studies is also an option for students.

Objectives

1. To provide students with a broad and deep understanding of histories, cultures, and ideas of African and persons of African Descent across space and time.

 

1. To provide student with opportunities to explore and advance novel forms of interdisciplinary scholarship that contribute to the formation of new theories and methods for understanding the world and human experience.

 

1. To help students explore and examine key intellectual figures, ideas, and themes in the discipline.

 

1. To analyze central disciplinary questions and debates, prominent theoretical and methodological frameworks used by scholars in the discipline.

 

1. To explore and examine forms of interdisciplinary scholarship that form and inform the production and reproduction of knowledge.
