English Minor

Goals

  1. To provide students with experiences for developing competencies in the process of composing
  2. To help students acquire knowledge of the English language and its literature and related cultures
  3. To help students develop skills in analyzing, evaluating, and responding to a wide range of literature
  4. To help students prepare for careers requiring a high degree of proficiency in writing, speaking, and critical reading and thinking
  5. To prepare students to do advanced work in English and other professional fields

The minor in English requires 21 hours as follows:

Nine hours (three courses) Core:

ENG 3306   - British Literature to 1800

ENG 3311   - Studies in African-American Literature

ENG 3313  - Studies in American Literature

Six hours (two courses) required:

ENG 3321   - Grammars of English OR ENG Introduction to Linguistics

ENG 3302   - Advanced Composition

Six hours (two courses) required; one must be a Senior-level elective:

ENG 33XX – Junior-Level English Elective

ENG 43XX – Senior-level English Elective

Students who minor in English must earn a grade of C or above in all courses taken for the minor.
