Chinese Minor

Minor in Chinese – 18 credit hours

Why study Chinese at WSSU?

The minor in Chinese was approved in 2016 to provide students the opportunity to learn Chinese and to understand the exponential contributions of the Sino world. With China’s position as a world power, and growing influence on the global stage, Chinese language is also becoming more commonly used throughout the world. Over one billion people speak Chinese (including dialects) in the world. China’s culture is over 5000 years old making it one of the world’s oldest and richest continuous cultures.

China is among the largest trading partners of the United States.

Chinese is one of the five official languages used by the United Nations.

Complement your undergraduate major by completing the minor in Chinese.

The program of study for the minor in Chinese consists of a minimum of eighteen (18) semester hours.  To satisfy the minor requirement in Chinese, all courses must be taken and completed with a grade of C or better.

Student Learning Outcomes

At the successful completion of the minor students will:

  1. Demonstrate intermediate level of foreign language proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and culture.
  2. Be able to apply critical thinking, and analytical reasoning to the linguistic, literary, historical and cultural components of the language.
  3. Demonstrate understanding of the five goals of world language study: communication, cultures, connection, comparisons, and communities.

Minor Program Curriculum

Language Courses (minimum requirement of 12 SH)

Students must choose at least four courses from the following list of courses:

CHI 1311 - Elementary Chinese I   

CHI 1312 - Elementary Chinese II    

CHI 2311 - Intermediate Chinese I   

CHI 2312 - Intermediate Chinese II    

CHI 3301 - Advanced Chinese I   

CHI 3305 - Advanced Chinese II    

CHI 3315 - Survey of Modern Chinese Literature    

CHI 4301 - Independent Study in Chinese   

Culture Courses (minimum requirement of 3 SH)

Students select one or two culture courses from the list to complete the minor:

CHI 1318 - Introduction to China in the World    

CHI 2315 - Contemporary China Youth Cultures    

CHI 3309 - Comparative Cultures: Africa and China    

Students may apply up to six (6) semester hours of study abroad credits to the minor program.
