Program Description

The Master of Business Administration (MBA) program at Winston Salem State University is designed to promote the socio-economic moobility and career advancement of working professionals.  The MBA program is designed for early to mid-career professionals aspiring to become effective managers and leaders.  Our philosophy is inclusive and has historically enrolled a diverse body of students halling from a variety of racial and ethnic backgrounds.

The MBA curriculum comprises of 8 core courses (24 semester hours) and 4 electives (12 semester hours).  The core curriculum provides a broad understanding of core functional areas in business (such as accounting, management, marketing , finance, and economics).  The electives impart cutting edge knowledge from a managerial application s perspecive in subjects usch as blockchain and artificial intelligence among others.  Faculty who teach in the graduate program employ an experiential teaching approach that infuses active student learning and timely coverage of current business topics.

Students can enroll in either fall or spring sesmester.  The classes are offered in the evenings and students enroll in two courses per semester and graduate in two years.

 

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the MBA Program, students will demonstrate the ability to:

  • Show Proficiency in Business Communication (Information Literacy, Written and Oral)
  • Integrate Business Knowledge to Demonstrate Effective Decision-making
  • Recognize and Respond to Social and Ethical Concerns in Business Situations
  • Be Reflective Learners who can Apply Their Business Knowledge/Skills 

Admission Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
  • Completed graduate school application with $50 fee
  • One official copy of all transcripts
  • Two professional recommendation letters
  • Written essay (350-500 words) that answers the three questions:
    • 1. Why do you want to pursue an MBA?
    • 2. What are your strengths and how will they contribute to the MBA program?
    • 3. How will the MBA program help you achieve your career goals?

Application Deadline

The deadline for receipt of all application materials is June 15th for fall semester admission and November 15th for spring semester admission. 

Transfer Credits

Subject to the approval by the MBA Program Director, up to six hours of graduate transfer credit may be applied toward the MBA. Graduate transfer credit will only be granted for courses completed with a grade of “B” or better and taken within the last five years.

Degree Requirements

Students in the MBA program must complete a total of thirty-six (36) credit hours to complete degree requirements. Additionally, they must maintain an overall grade point average of 3.0 (“B” average). No more than two grades of “C” may be earned in the program.

Time Limits for Completion

A student who enters the MBA program can complete the program in four (4) semesters and two (2) summers (2 years total). The time limit for completion of the program is five (5) years.

Foundation Courses


Some students may be admitted to the MBA program lacking undergraduate prerequisites in business. Such students may be required to complete up to 3 foundation courses (9 semester hours) in accounting, economics and/or business statistics as pre-requisites to graduate classes. The MBA Program Director will review an applicant’s undergraduate degree coursework to determine the required foundation courses.
