Program Description
The Sport and Wellness Studies (B.S.) program prepares students for impactful careers in education, coaching, and wellness. With concentrations in Teaching Health and Physical Education, Athletic Coaching, and Athletic Training, the program provides both theoretical knowledge and practical experiences to equip students for success in diverse professional settings. The Health and Physical Education Concentration will prepare skilled, effective teachers who have the ability to obtain licensure in North Carolina by completing a program that is grounded in scientific, foundational, and pedagogical knowledge. The Athletic Coaching Concentration (Non-Teaching Option) will prepare knowledgeable and skilled practitioners who, upon completion of a program that is well-rounded with scientific and foundational knowledge and experiential learning, are able to develop and implement safe and effective physical activity programs for all people in various settings. The Sports Medicine Concentration offers a strong foundation for individuals preparing to pursue graduate study in Athletic Training. The curriculum includes coursework in professional standards, operations, and foundational sciences, combined with practical observation and supervised experiences that introduce students to the profession. Upon successful completion of the program, the student will: - Demonstrate knowledge of scientific and theoretical basis for human movement so that they can plan, implement, and evaluate health and physical activity programs.
- Demonstrate knowledge, skills, and dispositions to effectively teach/implement safe and developmentally appropriate health and physical activity programs.
- Demonstrate knowledge, skills and disposition to effectively teach/implement the fitness and nutrition concepts needed to reduce and prevent obesity.
- Demonstrate competence in a variety of motor skills and fitness activities.
- Demonstrate professional and ethical behavior and the dispositions of an emerging professional.
HPE Teacher Education Track Specialized Admission Requirements for the Educator Preparation Program (EPP)
Students seeking teacher licensure must apply to the Educator Preparation Program (EPP) in the spring of their sophomore year. The application process includes submitting required materials, completing a virtual interview, and passing the PRAXIS Core exam. To be admitted and remain in the program, students must earn at least a C in all major and professional courses and maintain a minimum 2.7 GPA. Students are required to obtain the following passing scores or have the equivalent SAT or ACT scores in each area of Praxis Core. Students who have a combined SAT score of 1100 are exempt from taking the Praxis Core exam. Course Notes
- PED 4615 - Internship Credits: 6 hrs Application and placement procedures must be completed by the end of the semester immediately preceding the actual internship. Students are strongly encouraged to enroll in no more than 12 credit hours during the internship semester. Enrollment in more than 12 hours requires prior approval.
- EDU 4981 - Observation, Student Teaching, and Practicum Credits: 9 hrs Students must complete all course requirements with the exception of PED 4333 - Student Teaching Seminar - prior to student teaching.
- HED 3310 - Adult First Aid/CPR/AED Credits: 3 hrs Students are also required to have current CPR and First Aid certification during the semester in which they begin their practicum. This can be acquired by passing HED 3310 or taking the certification courses from the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association.

HPE Teacher Education
To complete the major in Sport and Wellness Studies and be eligible for Licensure in Health and Physical Education, the student must satisfy the general education course requirements as well as the major and professional education components of the program. Students must earn a minimum grade of a C in each major and professional course and maintain a minimum 2.7 grade cumulative point average to continue in the major. Students are also required to have current CPR and First Aid certification during the semester that they begin their pre-clinical experience. This can be acquired by passing HED 3236 - Adult CRP/AED or taking the certification courses from the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association. Athletic Coaching
To major in Sports and Wellness Studies with a concentration in Athletic Coaching (non-teaching track), the student must satisfy the general education course requirements as well as the major components of the program. Students are required to earn a minimum grade of a C grade in each major and professional course and maintain a minimum 2.5 grade point average to continue in the major. Six hours of Electives are required for the Athletic Coaching Concentration to satisfy the Breadth requirements. Sports Medicine
To major in Sports and Wellness Studies with a concentration in Sports Medicine, the student must satisfy the general education course requirements as well as complete the following prerequisites: BIO 2311/2111 Anat & Phys I & Lab, BIO 2312/2112 Anat & Phys II & Lab, CHE 1313/1113 General Chem I & Lab, MAT 2326 Elem Stats, HED 2301 Nutrition. Students are required to earn a minimum grade of a C grade in each major and professional course and maintain a minimum 3.0 grade point average to continue in the major. Six hours of Electives are required for the Athletic Coaching Concentration to satisfy the Breadth requirements. Total Credit Hours for the Major: 120
