Division of Undergraduate Programs

The Division of Undergraduate Programs consists of five units: Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL); Honors Program; International Programs; QEP Writing in the Major (WIM) Program; and the Upward Bound Program.

Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL)

CETL provides workshops, institutes, and speakers to empower WSSU faculty to be more effective teachers. CETL seeks to improve student learning by enhancing teaching competences and resources, through the integration of education, information, and communication technologies. The Office supports the development of online and web-based courses, uses and trains faculty in the use of digital teaching-related resources, and supports the development of research proposals and studies relating to teaching

Honors Program

The Honors Program at Winston-Salem State University offers academically talented students a well-rounded education that combines academic studies with cultural enrichment and service to the community. Through an intensive curriculum and a variety of leadership opportunities, students in the Honors Program at WSSU receive the best education possible while preparing for graduate studies or a career. Serving more than 250 students, the Honors Program provides the additional advantages of cultural enrichment activities and academic support, as well as internship, co-op and study-abroad experiences.

The Honors College recognizes students for their academic achievement while challenging them to maintain a high standard of excellence. Several program features and activities are designed to ensure that this goal is met:

The Honors Program ensures that scholars have a relevant, challenging, rewarding experience. It promotes a lifelong, disciplined approach to knowledge and scholarship through inquiry and exploration. Through quality educational experiences and co-curricular activities, scholars are ready to be creative and critical-thinking leaders in their professions and communities.

International Programs

The Office of International Programs (OIP) supports and promotes curricular and co-curricular programs, including study abroad and exchanges and international student and scholar services, in order to develop a global perspective that will equip students with knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors to live and function in an increasingly interconnected global environment.

OIP provides support for international students and scholars on all matters related to admissions, enrollment, and/or employment processes, as well as F-1 and J-1 visa information. The office issues, updates and maintains records of all F-1 and J-1 international students and scholars. It also plans and implements activities associated with orientation, acculturation, and hosting of international students and scholars.

The Office serves as a clearinghouse for the dissemination of information on opportunities for experiences abroad, including study, research, internships, service, and teaching for students, faculty, and administrators. The office is responsible for coordinating experience abroad programs for WSSU students through various exchange programs like The University of North Carolina Exchange Program (UNCEP) and the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP).

QEP Writing in the Major Program (WIM)

The QEP WIM Program will be implemented beginning in fall 2010. The program is designed to provide an infrastructure and support resources to faculty and students to improve the writing proficiency of juniors and seniors. The program targets juniors and seniors who are enrolled in designated junior- and senior- level courses with an emphasis on writing. Students in these courses are required to engage in the writing process. Outside of classes, students are required to have drafts of their papers reviewed by peers and professionals in the Writing Center. The Program schedules peer review workshops, information literacy workshops, and writing workshops for students. The Program also holds writing strategies, writing assessments, and related workshops for faculty.

Upward Bound Program

The Upward Bound Program provides academic instruction, tutoring and counseling for high school students who meet criteria which include low income and first generation. Counselors follow students’ progress in high school, and students learn about the college application process and how to apply for financial aid. During the summer, Upward Bound students live on the college campus and are involved in an intensive academic study program with an emphasis on English, mathematics, science, reading, writing and foreign language. Upward Bound’s residential program runs for six weeks during the summer.
