Student Learning Outcomes
Students will:
- Have the knowledge to use mathematics as a technical tool.
- Possess the skills to solve problems, think critically, and communicate mathematically.
- Use technology, such as graphing calculators and computers, in mathematics applications.
- Be able to effectively use mathematics in their career or graduate school program.
General Requirements
A. Admission
To be admitted to the mathematics major, the student must:
- Complete the general education courses that are required by the mathematics major as well as MAT 2317 Calculus I and MAT 2318 Calculus II.
- Complete 34 semester hours of general education core requirements, unless the student holds an associate’s or a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
- Have an overall grade point average of 2.0 or higher.
- Earn a grade of at least C in all mathematics courses taken for the major.
- Make formal application to the department and complete a successful personal interview.
Students transferring from an accredited college or university should satisfy the criteria listed above. They may receive transfer credit for courses that fit satisfactorily into the plan for the major.
B. Degree
- To graduate with a major in mathematics, a student must earn a grade of at least C in all mathematics courses taken for the major.
- In the case of a student transferring from an accredited college or university, the final 30 hours of general graduation requirements for the mathematics major should be completed at WSSU.
- A student who holds a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and seeks a second degree in mathematics must complete the following requirements:
- Satisfy admission to the major requirements listed for first-degree students.
- Complete or receive transfer credit for only those general education courses that are listed as general graduation requirements for the mathematics major.
- Complete or receive transfer credit for the mathematics and computer science courses required in the major.
- Complete the final 30 semester hours of general graduation requirements for the mathematics major at Winston-Salem State University.

Mathematics Course Requirements
The mathematics major leads to a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics. The major requires a minimum of 68 semester hours (SH) and a maximum of 77 SH of required and elective courses. These include 54 SH of mathematics, 8 SH of calculus-based physics and 6 SH of high-level programming languages. The courses required of pure mathematics majors are: General Core Mathematics (3)

B.S. in Mathematics with an Emphasis in Statistics
The mathematics major with a concentration in statistics leads to a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics. The major requires a minimum of 68 semester hours (SH) and a maximum of 77 of required and elective courses. These include 54 SH of mathematics, 18 hours of statistic courses, 8 semester hours of calculus based physics and 6 semester hours of high-level programming languages. The courses required of pure mathematics majors are: General Core Mathematics (3)

Students may place out of one or more required mathematics courses (MAT 1311, 1312, 1313, and/or 2303) by taking a series of placement exams and may receive credit toward their general education requirements.
Continuing students may, through the department chair, petition for an examination to be exempted from a nonlaboratory mathematics course. A student must present sufficient documentation to support the petition. Proficiency exams are administered during the final examination period only.
