RED 6311 - Teaching Literacy in Middle SchoolCredits: 3 hrs Teaching Literacy in the Middle School is a graduate-level course developed for middle school teachers. This three-hour course explores methods for teaching middle school students to read, write, think, and learn in ways that allow them to master the subject matter and meaningfully apply their understanding. Candidates are introduced to and engaged in the use of a wide range of research-based instructional practices and approaches. Teacher candidates learn to plan lessons that teach content and nurture greater literacy use in the content areas. Pre-, during-, and post-reading strategies are explored, along with assessment strategies that give middle grades students a continuous view of their literacy progress and achievement in the content areas. Also introduced are methods of teaching writing that enlarge and deepen students’ understanding of subject matter. Teacher candidates will be introduced in this course to the use of technology in teaching literacy in the content areas. (Field work will be required)
