CHE 2020 - Study Abroad in Chemistry Credits: 3 hrs The study abroad class will introduce students to experimental concepts at the microscale level. Students will gain hands-on experience using variuos microscale laboratory equipment and techniques and learn to problem-solve and critically think to improve laboratory procedures. During the first 7-8 weeks: use microchemistry kits to test labs for accuracy, make modifications to experimental protocols, design and build kits in zip-top bafs, update and print student and teacher manuals, and prepare to travel abroad to conduct a workshop and train high-school teachers on how to use kits. The course will align the experiemental topics covered in the class with the West African Senior School Certificate Exam, required for students to enter university. The course will also introduce students to perspectives that provide a more expanded view of the history, culture, politics of the host country and the West African region, in general, empowering them to become global citizens. The overseas trip will preferably take place during spring break. If there is no travel, students will host an international virtual workshop from the WSSU campus. The final part of the course will conclude with classes on campus to connect our experiential learning with a deeper understanding of Sierra Leone and Africa in a globalized world by presenting students’ experiences.
