The Department of Liberal Studies offers two degree-granting – African and African American Studies and Interdisciplinary Studies – and three non-degree granting programs of study – Humanities, Philosophy, and Religious Studies. In addition, the department provides courses which offer students a breadth of knowledge and key skills that help fulfill the mission of the general education curriculum. The faculty bring to the department a plethora of teaching, scholarship, and service experiences in various fields of study and liberal arts education which enhance their ability to offer a rich and engaging curriculum.
The program of Interdisciplinary Studies within the Department of Liberal Studies provides an option for general degree completion for adults through its flexible curriculum which allows students to bring together their varied curricular experiences into a coherent curriculum that maximizes use of earned credit hours. All students receive individualized advising and course selection based upon the intended goal of the completed degree.
Mission
The Department of Liberal Studies offers a broad approach to degree completion through the study of multiple disciplines serving traditional and non-traditional students. This focus serves to develop graduates who will enter or continue their careers as engaged citizens with an understanding of interdisciplinary collaboration necessary in an increasingly diverse global economy.
Objectives
- Prepare students for careers in a rapidly changing global economy by honing their skills in the WSSU Student Learning Outcomes.
- Recruit and retain highly qualified faculty and encourage their continuous development in their interdisciplinary areas of interest.
- Support institutional strategic goals regarding equity, social justice, and engagement across the curriculum
