Mathematics Major with Secondary Education Teacher Certification, BS

Student Learning Outcomes

Students will:

  1. Have the knowledge to use mathematics as a technical tool.
  2. Possess the skills to solve problems, think critically and communicate mathematically.
  3. Use technology, such as graphing calculators and computers, in mathematics applications and in the classroom.
  4. Be able to effectively teach mathematics at the secondary level.

General Requirements

A. Admission

To be admitted to the mathematics major with secondary education teacher certification, a student must:

  1. Complete the general education courses that are required by the mathematics major as well as :
    1. MAT 2317 Calculus I
    2. MAT 2318 Calculus II
  2. Complete the remaining 38 hours of general core requirements, unless the student holds an associate’s or a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  3. Have an overall grade point average of 2.5 or higher.
  4. Earn a grade of at least C in all mathematics courses taken for the major.
  5. Students must earn the secondary education teaching certificate by participating in the teacher education program. Application to that program is normally made during the sophomore year when the student is enrolled in EDU 2304: Sociological, Historical and Philosophical Foundations of Education. Students should consult the guidelines outlined for teacher education programs listed under the Department of Education in this catalog. These guidelines concern responsibilities to the director of teacher education and the Teacher Education Committee, requirements for admission to teacher education and student teaching, and conditions for retention in teacher education and recommendation for a North Carolina certificate.
  6. Students who already have a college degree should consult the guidelines for certification of college graduates listed by the Department of Education in its discussion of teacher education programs.
  7. Students transferring from an accredited college or university should satisfy the criteria listed above. They may receive transfer credit for courses that fit satisfactorily into the plan for the major.

B. Degree

  1. A student must earn a grade of at least C in all mathematics courses taken for the major.
  2. In the case of students transferring from an accredited college or university, the final 30 hours of general graduation requirements for the mathematics major with a secondary education teaching certificate should be completed at WSSU.
  3. Students should also follow the teacher education program guidelines mentioned above in the section on admission to the mathematics major with secondary education teacher certification.

Secondary Mathematics Course Requirements


The mathematics major with secondary education teacher certification leads to a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics. The major requires a minimum of 85 semester hours and a maximum of 86 semester hours of required and elective courses. These include 39 semester hours of mathematics, 8 semester hours of calculus-based physics, 6 semester hours of high-level programming languages, and 30 hours of professional courses. Professional courses are subject to change whenever new guidelines are approved by certification agencies. *MAT 1311, 1312, or 1313 will also satisfy the General Core mathematics requirement.

Placement and Proficiency Examinations for Mathematics Courses


Students may place out of one or more required mathematics courses (MAT 1311, 1312, 1313, and/or 2303) by taking a series of placement exams and may receive credit toward their general education requirements.

Continuing students may, through the department chair, petition for an examination to be exempted from a nonlaboratory mathematics course. A student must present sufficient documentation to support the petition. Proficiency exams are administered during the final examination period only.

Credit, but no grade, will be granted for courses that the department determines may be by-passed as a result of exemption by examination.
