The Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Economics is the ideal program of study for students planning on attending Masters or Doctoral programs immediately following their completion of the Bachelors degree. Whether a student’s eventual goal is a graduate degree in any business field or from a law school, economics is the most appropriate undergraduate business field. The courses required for the major of economics instill the deepest business-field philosophies. The major program in economics is designed to prepare students for careers in several fields of business, industry, government and several areas of graduate study. Graduates will find career opportunities in private research and consulting organizations, financial institutions, insurance companies, and government agencies. This program will be facilitated by faculty committed to effective teaching, to expanding intellectual knowledge in their fields and to improving their communities.

Students who major in economics are required to complete 41 semester hours of general education core courses, 45 semester hours of business core, 30 semester hours of major program requirements and 6 semester hours of electives. In total, students are required to complete 122 semester hours (excluding developmental skills courses).

Learning Goals

The learning goals of the economics major are to produce graduates who:

  1. Understand the functioning of a market economy and the impact of policies using models related to different schools of thought.
  2. Understand the principles of price determination in the goods  and factor markets, income and resource allocation, production, consumption, cost concepts, and distribution.
  3. Can communicate current economic issues in written form; and
  4. Demonstrate the ability to solve economic problems using appropriate research methods.

(GE) General Education Core Requirements

1. Math placement test is used to select the initial Math course. Students placed into MAT 1312 (or higher) receive credit for MAT 1311 (and MAT 1312).

2. Choose two (2) social sciences with different prefixes from: POS 2311, PSY 2301, (HIS 1301, 1302, 3341, or 3342) and SOC 2301. See note four (4) below.

3. Choose one (1) Humanities course from: ART 2306, HUM 2310, REL 3311, PHI 2301, PHI 2303. See note four (4) below.

4. One African American Experience (AAE) course is required. This course also can either fulfill the humanities requirement (ART 2306, HUM 2310, REL 3311), a social science requirement (HIS 3341, HIS 3342) or neither (SOC 4311).

5. Choose one (1) physical science from: (PHS 2336/2136 or 2337/2137), (CHE 1411 or 2411), or (PHY 2421, 2422 or 3431).

6. At least three (3) hours of electives must be taken outside the School of Business and Economics. Double major or minor requirements may be used as electives. Suggested electives are: BUA 3302, FIN 2356, FIN 4378, MGT 1304, MIS 3330, and MKT 3301.

7. Choose one (1) from ECO 3310, 3312, 3317, 3320, 3330, or 3331. The specific course offered will change from year to year.

8. MIS 1380 can alternatively be fulfilled by CSC 1306.

Note: Grades of “C” or better are required in all Economics Major Requirements. No more than two (2) “D” grades are permitted in courses prefixed by ACC, BCO, BLA, BUA, ECO, FIN, MGT, MIS, MKT or QBA.
