Requirements for Admission
To be eligible to enter the professional phase of the Clinical Laboratory Science Program, students must have at least a 2.5 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale, and have completed 40 semester hours in general studies plus 31 semester hours in pre-professional studies. Students must also have a Science and Math GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
Transfer students must comply with the university’s admission and general prerequisite requirements. Second degree students must complete required pre-professional courses.
Students must apply for the professional phase of the Clinical Laboratory Science Program. Completed applications are due in the office of the Chair, Department of Clinical Laboratory Science by March 1st. All students will be notified of eligibility for interview by the Clinical Laboratory Science Admission and Selection Committee. The committee will notify applicants of its decision by April 15th. Once accepted, students will begin the professional phase in the fall.
Progression Policy
All courses designated with the prefix CLS (except CLS 2102, CLS 2101, CLS 2401, CLS 2402 and CLS 2403) in the sample curriculum for Clinical Laboratory Science are professional phase courses. All courses must be passed with a grade of C or better.
- Failure to obtain a grade C in a repeated course will be grounds for dismissal from the program.
- Students who receive grades of less than C in two courses (one F and one D or two Ds) will not be permitted to progress in the professional phase. Following the receipt of the second unacceptable grade (D or F) the admission committee will conduct an immediate review of the student’s record and recommend action.
- The students may reapply for admission by following the admission process for the professional component of the program.
- The students may appeal a dismissal recommendation according to the university’s appeal process.
Class Attendance Policy
Students in Clinical Laboratory Science must follow the university policy on class attendance for upperclassmen. There are two additional policies for the student who majors in Clinical Laboratory Science.
- Each student must attend all scheduled clinical activities. The student has a responsibility to himself or herself as a learner, to the assigned clients, to co-workers and to fellow students.
- A student who attends class irregularly or demonstrates other evidence of academic and clinical irresponsibility is subject to a request for withdrawal from the Clinical Laboratory Science course or major.

(GE) General Education Core Requirements Internet-Based Clinical Laboratory Science Program
This program is offered to experienced medical laboratory technicians (MLTs) interested in obtaining a BSMT degree and is specifically designed for working adults. The required courses incorporate Internet delivery and require minimal on-campus time (one Saturday per month).
Requirements for Admission
- Certified or certification eligible MLTs (AMT, ASCP, NCA or other recognized certifying agencies).
- A minimum of 1 year full-time work experience in a medical laboratory.
- An associate degree or equivalent educational experience.
- Completed university and department applications (completed processing fee, while completed department application is sent to department), one set of official transcripts sent to the Admissions Office, a second set of official transcripts sent to CLS department, two letters of recommendation, an autobiography, and a one page essay explaining why the student wants to be a clinical laboratory scientist sent to Winston-Salem State University, Department Chair, Clinical Laboratory Science Department, FL Atkins, Suite 401 Winston-Salem, NC 27110.
- Personal interview.
Course Requirements
Fifty-six semester credit hours are required for the BSMT, including courses in hematology, immunohematology, clinical chemistry, microbiology, instrumentation, serology, urinalysis, mycology, and parasitology. Clinical courses will be project based. Depending on previous college courses, additional liberal arts courses may be required to fulfill state mandated general education core requirements (English, math, psychology, etc.).
Time Requirement
Depending on previous college work, full-time off-campus students can complete the program in two years (including summers). Part-time students and students completing general education courses will take longer.
Student Activities
The Clinical Laboratory Science student is a member of the student body of the university and participates in those campus activities in which there is a personal interest. It is strongly recommended that clinical laboratory science/medical laboratory science majors become members of the WSSU Clinical Laboratory Science Club. Membership in the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science and the North Carolina Society for Clinical Laboratory Science is required of all senior students.
