Swahili Minor

Program Description


The minor in Swahili requires a minimum of 18 semester hours, beginning with the elementary level sequence of courses. The intermediate level of the language is a prerequisite for all upper-level courses leading to the minor.  Students must attain a grade of C- or better in all courses taken for the minor.

Learning Objectives


  • To develop listening, speaking, writing, and reading skills in Swahili to the intermediate level (ACTFL Guidelines.)
  • To prepare students for an understanding of social, economic, and political issues in South Eastern Africa.
  • To prepare students for success in the global society by availing them of opportunities to learn and understand about Swahili-speaking peoples and cultures.

Student Learning Outcomes


At the successful completion of the minor students will:

  1. Demonstrate intermediate level of foreign language proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and culture.
  2. Be able to apply critical thinking, and analytical reasoning to the linguistic, literary, historical and cultural components of the language.
  3. Demonstrate understanding of the five goals of world language study: communication, cultures, connection, comparisons, and communities.

Minor Program Curriculum


The following courses will count toward the minor in Swahili:

Additional Course for the Minor


SWA 3333 - Survey of Swahili Literature  may count towards the minor, if and when offered.

Minor Requirements


SWA 2311 - Intermediate Swahili I  and SWA 2312 - Intermediate Swahili II  are prerequisites for the upper-level courses.

The minor in Swahili will allow up to 6 transferable credits in courses in Swahili language and culture, or courses related to the Swahili-speaking regions from institutions other than WSSU.

Study Abroad Opportunities for students studying Swahili


AAS 2020 - Study Abroad in the Discipline  (3SH) is a WSSU signature program to Kenya. Students may transfer credits earned in the program to count toward the minor in Swahili.

Students who wish to enroll in AAS 2020 - Study Abroad in the Discipline  or other study abroad programs must obtain departmental approval. Study abroad opportunities are available in the Office of International Programs, and students may transfer up to 6 semester hours from study abroad programs for the minor.
