English as a Second Language Minor

Program Description

The minor in English as a Second Language Studies consists of a minimum of 18 semester hours.  This minor does not qualify the student for initial teacher licensure in North Carolina.  Hours completed, however, may be used to satisfy requirements in an approved program.

Required Courses

• ESL 2305 - Language, Culture, and Cross- cultural Interaction Credits: 3
• ESL 2310 - Englishes of the World Credits: 3
• ESL 2320 - Language and Society Credits: 3 hrs
• ESL 3302 - Foundations of Second Language Acquisition Credits: 3 hrs

Electives

Select a minimum of three semester (3) hours from the following courses.

• ALS 3300 - Cultural Aspects of Teaching and Learning ESL Credits: 3 hrs
• ALS 3301 - ESL Grammar for Teachers Credits: 3 hrs
• ALS 3303 - Effective Teaching Methods in ESL Credits:
• ALS 3308 - Literacy Strategies for ESL Learners Credits: 3 hrs

Total Credit Hours: 18
