Program Description

Study Abroad in Brazil during spring semester:  Contact the Department of World Languages and Cultures, or the Office of International Programs for more information.

There are many reasons to learn Portuguese.  Here are a few.

Portuguese is a European language spoken by more than 230 million people; it is the official language of Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, East Timor, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal and São Tome and Principe.  It is also spoken in the Portuguese islands of Madeira and Azores.

Brazil plays an important role in the 21st century economy, numbering among the ten largest world economies.  The language of the people who created capoeira and the Samba, Brazil is home to the largest population of Africans outside Africa.

Portuguese is an important language for anyone who wishes to visit Rio de Janeiro during the Carnival, or participate in WSSU’s study abroad program to Salvador da Bahia.
