Chinese Minor

Program Description


Why study Chinese at WSSU?

The minor in Chinese was approved in 2016 to provide students the opportunity to learn Chinese and to understand the exponential contributions of the Sino world. With China’s position as a world power, and growing influence on the global stage, Chinese language is also becoming more commonly used throughout the world. Over one billion people speak Chinese (including dialects) in the world. China’s culture is over 5000 years old making it one of the world’s oldest and richest continuous cultures.

  • China is among the largest trading partners of the United States.
  • Chinese is one of the five official languages used by the United Nations.
  • Complement your undergraduate major by completing the minor in Chinese.

The program of study for the minor in Chinese consists of a minimum of eighteen (18) semester hours.  To satisfy the minor requirement in Chinese, all courses must be taken and completed with a grade of C or better.

Student Learning Outcomes


At the successful completion of the minor students will:

  1. Demonstrate intermediate level of foreign language proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and culture.
  2. Be able to apply critical thinking, and analytical reasoning to the linguistic, literary, historical and cultural components of the language.
  3. Demonstrate understanding of the five goals of world language study: communication, cultures, connection, comparisons, and communities.

Program Curriculum


  1. No more than 6 semester credit hours may be transferred toward the minor.
  2. The level of courses’ pre-requisites will be based on the course sequence or determined by the faculty member.
  3. Students may take only one Independent Study course in concentration to complete the minor.

The 18 credit hours in the minor will be met with the following courses:

Culture Courses (6 - 3 hrs selected from the list)


Students select six culture courses from the list to complete the minor:

Language Courses (minimum requirement of (12 - 15 SH)


To satisfy the minor requirements, all required courses must be taken and completed with a grade of C- or better.  Students must choose 4-5 courses from the following list of courses:

With the approval of the department, and in conjunction with the Office of International Programs, students may also include up to six (6) semesters hours of credit from study abroad programs if these courses are taught in Chinese, or have content related to the Chinese speaking world.
